Dogs Delivered from Dire Deep Water

The United Animal Nations volunteers have been helping to rescue and rehabilitate the animal flood victims of the Midwest. Kudos!
These animals are being plucked off of rooftops and out of attics. They're scared and separated from their owners. A big round of applause for the volunteers for all their hard work.

Doggy Dream Homes

Wow, check out these dream homes for dogs! I'm in the same boat as the commenters, though. My dogs just wouldn't sleep in their own little house, unless it was inside the main house and they thought of it as their crate.

Dozing Dobermans

Here are Buffy and Nemo asleep on the floor. Buffy snores and that cracks me up. It's just not very ladylike.

Missing My Babygirl

Three years ago today we had to say goodbye to our little Tiffy-girl. I miss her so. She lived a long, healthy life (after a puppyhood bout with Parvo) and she was spoiled. Her body just up and gave out on her. We took her in to a specialist because she would just walk around in circles constantly. The Doc took some x-rays and said she only had a month left. We had to let Tiffany go just a week later and it was heartbreaking.

I will always remember her zest for life, she had such enthusiasm. If you sat down and crossed your legs, she would position herself over your foot to get a belly rub.
Tiffany was a great Doberman and I am blessed to have had her in my life.

Tainted Pet Food Settlement

Here's the update on the lawsuit by pet owners against those foul companies who imported a dangerous ingredient from China to use in the manufacture of pet foods.
Nearly 1,500 dogs and cats died as a result.
I'm truly sorry if yours was one of the ones affected. My animals are all OK.

Determined Dog Discovers Dad from Distance

Brian Dennis is a 37-year-old Marine who had been stationed on the Iraq-Syria border. Brian had cared for a dog that was roaming with a pack of other dogs near his camp.

The dog is a shepherd-collie mix that Brian named "Nubs" because its ears were nubby, perhaps from abuse when the dog was a puppy.

Brian's unit ended up relocating to a new area 70 miles away. Apparently Brian wasn't allowed to bring Nubs with him, so he left Nubs behind, never expecting to see the dog again. But a couple of days later the dog miraculously showed up at Brian's new location.

Nubs had traveled 70 MILES in SUB-FREEZING temperatures to find Brian. The military normally wouldn't allow a Marine to take a pet home to the U.S. from Iraq, but the Marines are bending the rules so Brian can take Nubs home.

Missing Hiker's Dog Found at Store

I feel so bad for the family and friends of missing Georgia hiker Meredith Emerson, who diappeared on New Year's Day after going on a hike in the woods with her dog, Ella. I feel bad for her dog, who I'm sure is wondering where it's mommy is. The dog, a Labrador mix, was found wandering in the parking lot of a convenience store 3 days after Meredith's disappearance and was identified by an implanted microchip.

Police Dog Victim of Animal Cruelty

This story made me cringe. The perpetrator was in the country illegally in addition to other crimes.

Downed D.C. Dog Update

OK, I'm finding out that it was not a Doberman that was shot by a cop at the dog park near 24th in D.C. It was a brown Boxer named Scooby. The distraught owner has three kids and I really feel for them. Losing a dog is hard enough, but losing one on Christmas Eve, that's just terrible.

Doberman Downed in DC Dog Park

A D.C. police officer shot a red Doberman to death at the 24th Street Dog Park in Washington D.C. on Christmas Eve. The police officer claims the dog was attacking him. The owner is calling for an investigation into the crime.
I'll update this story as soon as I find out more information.

Duty Dog Gets Early Retirement

This is a bittersweet story with a somewhat happy ending. The family of a Marine who was killed in Iraq was able to adpot the dog who was with their son when he died. They picked him up from a Marine base in Georgia and now he lives with them. It's very unusual for the dogs to be released prior to retirement age, so I'm glad they were able to take Lex home with them.

Vote for Winnie

Got this in an e-mail:

As you may or may not know it is not my practice
to send you group emails. Yet the reason I am
sending this email is for a friend of mine. Her
name is Winnie Varco-Burns. I have known Winnie
since she was in 2nd grade. She was a friend of
my younger sister, Michelle, who passed 4 yrs ago
and like a kid sister to me. While growing up in
Ft. Lauderdale, Fla, she spent most of her time
at our house (my mom thought she had 3 daughters
instead of two). Winnie has a website for her
work in rescuing wild animals and exotic pets,
who have been abused, abandoned, maimed or hurt
in some way.
http://www.creaturesafeplace.com/index.html Her
organization, which is non-profit, is called
"Creature Safe Place", which is in Ft. Pierce,
Fla. The Discovery channel, which owns the amimal
planet channel, is having it's annual contest
called "Hero of the Year". The winner receives
$10,000.00 for their non-profit organization. And
they receive two tickets to Hawaii, which Winnie
says she will cash in because she can not leave
her home because of the animals. That is
devotion. I know that she has not had a vacation
since she began her organization.

To tell you a little more about her; many years
ago she gave up her well paid career as an ER
nurse to start saving wild life. She has
dedicated her life to these animals. And though
she receives donations for various places, her
previous standard of living has lowered as she
has willingly dedicated her life to these
precious wild animals, who without her may have
died. There are numerous wild birds, deers,
raccoons, squirrels, and even alligators, who
would be dead if not for her. So please I am
asking each of you to vote for Winnie.

Thank you so much for your help for Winnie....it is well deserved.
